Hi, I’m John. I’m starting a new chapter — planning my retirement move from the Midwest to rural Texas. Along the way, I’m sharing what I learn about gardening, planning, and building a meaningful life in retirement.

This site is my personal retirement gardening journey — inspired by my grandfather, Big Nunz. I’ve spent decades working in manufacturing while tending gardens in the Midwest, and now I’m learning what it takes to grow vegetables, forage, and prepare for life in rural Texas.

Follow along as I share lessons, experiments, and stories — and maybe a few laughs along the way.

I chose the name “Big Nunz” to honor the memory of my grandfather. He never gardened and never left Illinois, but his humor, grit, and outlook on life continue to inspire this journey. This project is my way of carrying that spirit forward — learning, growing, and building something meaningful in retirement.
